‘RAW 2016’ - Raising Aspirations Week

During the week 25th - 29th January, the whole of the Wellington Academy was transformed in to a hub of activity to raise students’ awareness and aspirations about their future careers and pathways.

All week the assembly focus was about thinking big and aiming high. During tutor time, students played a game where they learned about the 10 apprenticeship sectors and careers within them.

Finally, organisations across the 10 apprenticeship sectors and local employers converged for the Academy’s 4th annual Careers Fair for a full day of advice giving and answering questions from students. The event was the culmination of a range of activities that went on throughout the week within tutor and assemblies and students were fully prepared to utilise the opportunity well. Students from Years 9, 10, 11, and 6th Form had the opportunity to meet face to face with people, find out more about different career pathways and options available to them. The day also included a carousel of workshops on university life, apprenticeships and employability skills. Particular thanks should go to Dstl, Simply Health, and Winchester University.

Year 11 had the opportunity to learn more about the apprenticeship routes and consider if this is what they would like to do next after their GCSEs.  Year 10 have work experience in the next few months so meeting local employers and gaining an insight in to their industries is a great way to help them decide what kind of experience they hope to achieve. Year 9 students attending were able to widen their knowledge about a range of careers and raise awareness of opportunities as they soon will be choosing their subject options.

Maria Hamblin said “Events such as this are more important than ever when more responsibility is being put on to schools to ensure good quality career guidance for students.”  The Wellington Academy students benefit from having a team of advisors on hand within the Academy at all key stages.
